Spam
Lurking within all areas technical and Internet related, folks exist who just like to mess with things. While there may be no economic or social benefit to creating a virus that destroys thousands of hard drives, some people will do it anyway. Just for the kicks? Who knows? On Pinterest we don’t have to worry about such severe problems. Ours is limited to the odd dose of spam.
Spam arrives in a couple of forms. First, people might repin your image of asparagus grilled with parmesan cheese with a comment like, “OMG I can’t believe this really is working! I finally got the summer bod I dreamed of. Thanks to http://bit.ly/Iwe4Hq95 it’s the hottest thing I have purchased all season!!!”
Now that obviously has nothing to do with grilling asparagus. But people will repin images with misleading comments in the hopes that enough viewers will click on the link and go to their website to make it worth their while.
Another form of spam is created when spammers post images with misleading links embedded in them. You click on the picture of the grilled asparagus and are taken to a suspicious website selling a “Sure Fire Way to Lose 50 Pounds in One Week!” These spammers will follow you on Pinterest hoping that you’ll see you’re being followed and will click on their images to learn more about who they are. Well, you’ll certainly learn more about them!
At this point, spam isn’t enough of a problem to worry about it. Pinterest says it’s actively working on ways to identify, reduce, and eventually stop spam.
